In the recent past in Turkey, men could not wear like pink and purple colors. In addition, they could not wear tight pants. Girls in schools could wear only a skirt. Men crying was disgraceful. Girls playing football was very strange. Only girls had helped to mothers mundane housework. These were all actions to create gender identity. while boys would not play with kitchen toys, girls would not play with cars too. Baby dolls and kitchen toys had been related to girls. Today somethings changed. However, boys in Turkey still don't play with baby dolls. Parents believe that playing with baby dolls affects their son's behavior negatively. Also, while boys play football and basketball, girls usually prefer playing volleyball and tennis. Today also, this situation depends on parents. I and most of my friends who have children , do not do any restricts to their children. They can play everything what they want such as playing with cars and playing soccer. On the other hand, Turkey is a big country and the west of Turkey has differences from the east of Turkey. As a result of this, Despite the modernism movement of Turkey, some traditional things continue. Therefore, the change will take time.

I like how you let your kids play with anything they want! It will take some time, but hopefully everyone will change.
ReplyDeleteI agree with your respect to children's interests that hepls they build their responsibility. Howere, in my opinion, we should give them a hint to choose what are suitable with their gender because each color and game has its meaning to orient gender identity
ReplyDeleteMy wife is a little more traditional than me when it comes to ideas of gender identity. I am more of a feminist than my wife, which is a funny situation. It is going fine, although there could be some challenges as my daughter gets older.
ReplyDeleteCulture affects our ideas, it is normal. Maybe your wife had not any bad experiences about gender discrimination.
